Charles Custis (SHS Councelor)

 

Charles William Custis, 78, of Big Horn, WY passed away at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan, Wyoming on July 9, 2020.
Chuck was born on October 26, 1941 to Thelma & Kenneth Custis in Sheridan, WY. He was raised by his Aunt Gladys and Uncle Bill Scott. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1959 and went on to
the University of Wyoming, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1963 and continued on to receive a Master’s degree in Counseling in 1968. He taught History in Big Piney, WY for
a year and then moved back to Sheridan to be a Guidance Counselor at Central Middle School for many years, moving on to Sheridan High School and retiring with over 30 years in Sheridan County School
District 2.
Chuck married Karen Aksamit in 1963 and had two sons. He later married Ann Johnson in 1971 and had one daughter. Chuck is survived by his children Kevin (Nina) Custis of Sheridan, Kenny (Lynn)
Custis of Sheridan, Charla Custis (Kirk Patterson) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Pete (Colette) Madsen of Hoffman Estates, IL; Grandchildren Jennifer, Kyle, Garrett, Kolin, Olivia, Gwen, Vivienne and Gordon;
and Cousin John Custis.
Chuck built his unique A-frame home in Big Horn, WY in 1971 and took pride in maintaining his lawn in a park-like fashion. He was also an accomplished drummer, being part of Drum & Bugle Corp and playing
with Marvin Fritz & Bill Rathburn at the Golden Steer for 30 years in Sheridan.
He was actively involved in the Kalif Shrine, enjoying his years as a Kalif Clown, a Lifetime member of the Elks, Wyoming Education Association and a Lifetime member of the National Education Association.
His passion for education led him to be an active lobbyist for education at the Wyoming State Legislature for 10 years, representing Sheridan County Retired Educators (SCREP).
Later in life Chuck loved to travel taking multiple cruises, as well as attending conventions to see more of the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thelma & Kenneth Custis, Aunt/Uncle Gladys & Bill Scott and Uncle Everett Evans.
Graveside services will be held on Monday at 10:00 am at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
