Philip J. Nowak

Philip J. Nowak, 54, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 1996 at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Mr. Nowak was born April 4, 1942 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Michael John and Mary (Kolotylo) Nowak.

On August 23, 1966 he was united in marriage to Jeni Nowak in Buffalo, Wyoming.

Mr. Nowak graduated from Saint Matthew's High School in Flint, Michigan.  He was valedictorian of  his class and excelled in football and basketball.  He attended University of Wyoming on a football scholarship where he received a B.S. in mathematics.

Mr. Nowak taught math at St. Matthew's in Flint and also at both Holy Name and Sheridan High School.  He coached wrestling for many years and also coached many successful academic teams including successive State Champion Academic Decathalon teams.  He received recognition from students, peers and within his profession for his contributions to education and youth activities.

Mr. Nowak served in Sheridan  City Government for over 20 years, including four terms as City counselor.  He served on the board of the Wyoming Association of Municipalities and numerous boards and commissions.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed people.  He was preceeded in death by his parents and father-in-law Tud Smith. 

Survivors include his wife Jeni of Sheridan; two sons, Patrick J. Nowak of Sheridan and John M. of Billings, Montana; John's fiance, Donna Harrison; and grandchildren, Chelsie and Haley Nowak; his brother Dan Nowak and family, Swarts Creek, Michigan; his sister Janine Doherty and family, Grand Blanc, Michigan; his mother-in-law  Jonesy Smith, Buffalo; his sister-in-law and families, Julie Blakely and Mary Anne Perry; his brothers-in-law and families Edgar and Toy Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

They and his many friends will miss him.  Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, at the Sheridan High School gymnasium.  Memorials in memory of Mr. Nowak may be designated to 911 Ambulance Foundation, P.O. Box 474, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801
